Current State of Police Affairs

A while back I wrote a piece that criticized the ST CLAIR POLICE DEPARTMENT for their inability to prevent the high amount of home break ins and automobile robberies.  Up until about a week ago, there was no other known stories or writing done on this subject until Jennifer Sattler wrote an article that was featured on the front page of “The Voice,” a local paper that covers the Blue Water Area.  She did a nice job on the article.

What was disturbing to me was a couple of “facts” that Chief of Police Richard Jefferson pointed out.  He was pretty clear in pointing out that the residents of St. Clair need to do a “better job” of locking their own property.  He also did a good job of UNDERSTATING the number of crimes reported in the last two years.

In talking to personal friends and associates that have had problems with burglaries recently, we have gotten the feeling that the only thing our POLICE FORCE is interested in protecting is property values and their own jobs.  What I mean here is simple.  By not reporting all the CRIME within the city, our crime rate appears to be normal.  A low crime rate makes the city look good and insures our policemen a long and happy career.

What I am proposing is this.  I am for higher property values, as I own multiple properties within the city.  Instead of protecting people by hiding the facts from them, why not MAKE POLICE REPORTS?  I do not get a check from the City of St Clair, so why do I have to be the one writing these stories?  Maybe we should find a way to catch and PROSECUTE these criminals?

It seems funny to me that FOX 2 spent all that time “busting” those 6 Chrysler employees for drinking beer and smoking weed on the job.  That was National News.  Meanwhile, 5700 residents of ST CLAIR live in fear every time the go to bed or leave their house to go to work.

The next time you see your councilman, mayor, or police chief…. Ask them what they are doing to end this problem.  I also invite your comments on this subject.  If you have had crimes performed against you, feel free to share them.  I am NOT listing the names of residents/victims personally, but they are certainly welcome to speak up as they feel fit.

Fishing is my passion. I am currently Chief Fishing Officer at www.ultimatemichiganfishing.com If there is a tournament in Michigan, I'll be there. If they are biting in the Upper Peninsula, I'll be there. When it's too rainy or dark to fish, I sit at my computer and write about it. I am always looking for better methods and products to make Michigan fishermen more successful and all around smarter anglers.

No surprise here. Chief Rick might be a nice enough guy, but he’s about as sharp as a bowling ball. It really shocked me when I heard he was named chief. Seriously? There has been too much political bullshit within the SCPD for years and unfortunately, the citizens are the ones who get screwed. Why the city would pick an officer that flew under the radar for many years and did enought to just get by is beyond me. I have to agree, pressure the city, the SCPD, your council members until something gets done.

We all like to think that we have a safe little community. Let the true facts be known.
How many homes have had articles stolen?
How many homes have had money stolen?
How many homes have had bikes and other toys stolen?
How many homes have had TVs stolen or other electronic devices?
How many cars have been looted?
How many backyards or front porches have had things staken from them?
What other questions should we be asking?

Should City Council be addressing this issue in a regular town meeting?
