The last few years have been very trying for my family. Hard economic times have forced us to tighten our budgets, sell off our assets, and seriously change our lifestyle. The last thing we needed was for our house to get broken into and lose the money from our wallets, purses, and kid’s piggy banks.

Like dozens of tax paying, hard working residents of St. Clair we were repeat victims of an evil and heartless criminal that would sneak into our houses at any hour of the day. In some cases right while my wife and young children were asleep!

My personal losses didn’t end at cash and piggy bank change. Firearms, video games, tools, video equipment, and more have been taken from my residence. Replacement value to date exceeds 6 thousand dollars from my family alone.

Recently, thanks to a fast acting citizen that stumbled upon the criminal in the act, an arrest was made and a suspect was questioned. The police searched the suspect’s apartment to find a collection of stolen property that rivalled any retail store’s sales floor.

The burglar’s name is Jackie Ray Hall, Jr. Here is a recent write up on the instance by The Times Herald.

“A 25-year-old East China Township man suspected in numerous breaking and enterings in the East China Township, China Township and St. Clair area was arrested and arraigned last week, according to a statement from the St. Clair County Sheriff Department.

Jackie Ray Hall Jr. was charged with two counts of home second-degree home invasion Friday.

Police responded to an East China Township home shortly before midnight Nov. 23 for a possible breaking and entering in progress. Deputies found the suspect had fled on foot and his vehicle was located near the home. Inside the truck officials saw several items believe to be stolen in other home invasions in the area.

The truck was impounded and a search warrant was requested for the vehicle and the suspect’s home on Bree Road.

Officials found several televisions, computers, electronic devices, jewelry, a gun cabinet and other items during the execution of the search warrant.

Hall was arrested Nov. 24. He has posted bond, which was set at $15,000 cash/surety.

Anyone who believes their property may be among the items recovered is asked to contact the St. Clair County Sheriff-Port Huron Police Major Crimes Unit at (810) 984-5383 .

Hall’s preliminary examination is set for 9:30 a.m. Dec. 8.”

Two counts of second degree home invasion? What the hell is that? He has already admitted to breaking into dozens of homes, and they found so much stolen property in his apartment that it has taken over a week for detectives just to sort through it.

So help me god, if this socially demented freak gets off with a slap on the wrist I will do all that I can to make sure heads roll!!! The St Clair Police Department, St Clair County Sherrif’s Department, and all of our citizens were hand delivered one of the county’s worst criminals of the decade. Their own feeble efforts were outdone by a civilian home owner. The least they could do for us is keep this evil bastard away from our children and homes.

Please take a moment to express your feelings to St Clair County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Wendling. His number is 810-985-2400 and also try victim’s services at 810-985-2301 .

I am going to be talking to the detectives on this case Friday December 3, 2010. I would LOVE for you to comment on this case, and I will be more than happy to share with them how we feel as threatened citizens of St Clair County. If you have heard of other individuals that were involved, please let us know about it. It seems to me that more than one person was responsible. Someone rented to him, knew him, and aided him.

This is a letter from Joe Jackson, CEO of WageWorks, Inc. It does a great job of explaining the new laws and policies regarding your flexible spending funds.

Dear Partner,

Now that health care reform has passed, we wanted to let you know what the changes mean for you and your employees. While the final legislative package includes some future limits on flexible spending accounts (“FSAs”), the benefit remains an extremely valuable cost-saving vehicle. Not only do employers save on FICA and workers compensation expenditures, but health FSA amounts are completely tax free for your employees. They are a proven tool to help employees manage their out-of-pocket health expenses and often improve your employee’s health status by alleviating budgeting concerns frequently associated with maintaining treatment regimes for chronic conditions.

Specifically, there are two ways that the health care reform legislation will impact FSAs. First, and not until January 1, 2013, contributions to the benefit will be limited to $2,500 per year but this cap will annually adjust thereafter since it is indexed for inflation. And secondly, starting in 2011, participants will need a doctor’s directive in order to use their FSA to cover the costs of over-the-counter drugs.

At WageWorks, we played an active role in influencing the legislative process and formation of health reform. Our involvement included making the case for protecting FSAs directly in meetings with policy makers on Capitol Hill and in the White House and sponsoring the Save Flexible Spending Plans Web site (www.savemyflexplan.org), which served as a vehicle for supporters to send over 75,000 emails to their elected representatives. We will continue to lobby for improvements to the benefit and do our best to ensure that FSAs remain an effective budgeting tool for every working American.

FSAs enable employers and employees to achieve cost-savings through reduced expenditures and tax savings. Given this, we believe there’s no time like the present to raise awareness about FSAs in a concerted effort to increase participation. On a parallel track, we are also preparing to launch a broad consumer education campaign focused on reaching and influencing prospective participants.

We look forward to staying in touch with you and collaborating even more closely in the future.

Sincerely,

Joe Jackson
CEO

A while back I wrote a piece that criticized the ST CLAIR POLICE DEPARTMENT for their inability to prevent the high amount of home break ins and automobile robberies. Up until about a week ago, there was no other known stories or writing done on this subject until Jennifer Sattler wrote an article that was featured on the front page of “The Voice,” a local paper that covers the Blue Water Area. She did a nice job on the article.

What was disturbing to me was a couple of “facts” that Chief of Police Richard Jefferson pointed out. He was pretty clear in pointing out that the residents of St. Clair need to do a “better job” of locking their own property. He also did a good job of UNDERSTATING the number of crimes reported in the last two years.

In talking to personal friends and associates that have had problems with burglaries recently, we have gotten the feeling that the only thing our POLICE FORCE is interested in protecting is property values and their own jobs. What I mean here is simple. By not reporting all the CRIME within the city, our crime rate appears to be normal. A low crime rate makes the city look good and insures our policemen a long and happy career.

What I am proposing is this. I am for higher property values, as I own multiple properties within the city. Instead of protecting people by hiding the facts from them, why not MAKE POLICE REPORTS? I do not get a check from the City of St Clair, so why do I have to be the one writing these stories? Maybe we should find a way to catch and PROSECUTE these criminals?

It seems funny to me that FOX 2 spent all that time “busting” those 6 Chrysler employees for drinking beer and smoking weed on the job. That was National News. Meanwhile, 5700 residents of ST CLAIR live in fear every time the go to bed or leave their house to go to work.

The next time you see your councilman, mayor, or police chief…. Ask them what they are doing to end this problem. I also invite your comments on this subject. If you have had crimes performed against you, feel free to share them. I am NOT listing the names of residents/victims personally, but they are certainly welcome to speak up as they feel fit.

What makes Mark an exceptional individual was his loyalty and generosity. As Magnum Architectural went through it’s growing pains, I could always trust that he would be there at the job site every day. Even in the early and late stages of our existence, Mark and I were the ones that went weeks or months without paychecks understanding that what we were doing was worth our time. That the company was more important than a paycheck every Friday. As economy, luck, and circumstance became more than I could bare, I was forced to part ways with Mark Avitts….. my employee, my business partner, my friend.

Mark has two daughters in their early 20′s and a great wife, Nancy. Working side by side with someone for all those years, you start to feel like you know their family as well as your own even though you had only met them a handful of times.

His daughter, Nicole, had gone in for a very routine wisdom tooth extraction on Friday, October 16th. Like millions of people that have had this done, she headed home to relax and recover for the weekend. By Sunday, the bleeding in her mouth had not subsided. In fact, she had lost so much blood that she was loosing consciousness. Her family rushed her to the emergency room for help in getting her stabilized. It was very shortly thereafter, that she was in a helicopter on her way to University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.

The following thread of emails are Mark’s communications with there entire group of family and friends. Please understand, Mark is very inexperienced with email and computers in general. I am leaving these unedited and in the EXACT format that they were sent to me.

Monday noonish we were called to Hurly Hospital , Nicole had three wisdom teeth pulled on friday. We were unawere that she was haveing mager problems over satrday and sunday with ecsesive bleeding . They called about 8 times to the dentist telling them that there was so much blood that she had begun getting lite headed and had fell. Both days they said just come in on monday. On monday when they finely saw her they told them to go to the ER imedetly. We arived about an hour after she did, Hurly was unable to stop the bleeding and had her air lifted to U of M Ann Arbor. In the mean time we discoverd the surgen who removed the teeth was not liesend to practice in Mich. After a very bad night at U of M

they stopped the werst of the bleeding but said she has luekeymean. We have started treatment rightaway but still have many doctors to talk with.

As far as we know this is very treatable type but we are still waiting to talk to the experts . We will send out more info as we know .

Last night was pretty bad, but this morning they got her to stop bleeding. Yesterday one of the doctors told us she may be the sickest people that they have to deal with not the news we were hoping for. Now that the bleeding is under control,they would like to start two types of treatment. the first is a four day and the second is seven days. She will get both at the same time, as sick as she is now this will make things worse but we have no options. She is off of the meds that keep her under so we hope to talk to her she still think that this is because of her teeth.We have been napping in the lounge but the hospital is going to give us a room here so they can have access 24/7. The treatment will start today . I know there is much more stuff to let u-all know but its been overwhelming to try to take in the info form so many different doctors. We are confident that this hospital is one of the best in the country for the type of help she needs.

Thank to every one for good thoughts and prays.

Mark & Nancy

PS The treatment will destroy all her immunity please bare this in mind if you come hear

Subject: Late Night Update Nicole

So far there has not been any major changes up or down. She has been in bad shape with the fluids in her lungs but as long as she stays the same there telling us that this is about the best we can hope for right now. We have herd so much bad news that I asked the doctor if there was any good news. He said that he will always be very straight with us and not sugar coat anything to give false hope. But everything that is going wrong is treatable and if something come up that they can’t stop he’ll tell us in no uncertain terms. It’s a little scary but at least we now where we stand. I still believe that there is on better place to have her right now.

again thanks to all of you for so much love and support

Today has been a good day finely,she is running a low fever mostly do to dieing cancer cells. We felt like we may be able to breath just a little bit,but the doctors have had to bring us down a bit because she really does have a long way to go. Over the next day or two all of her bone maro will die so there will be no white blood cells she will be susceptible to all type of infections for the next two weeks or more. They still have not woke her up enough to be able to respond. Today is a great step and that is how the next several weeks will be all a matter of steps but the team she has is remarkable and it is a hole team there are two nurses that work 12hr shifts and she is there only patient there are four doctors and there staff of course that one reason it be hard for us to try to keep up with all the info they give all day and night. It will be two more days before they try to wake her again because she is two weak. But for now she has been stable for almost 24hrs. the fact that she has leveled out with the chemo is great. When she wakes up we’re going to have to tell her what she has because they gave her drugs so fast this was never clear to her . We’re REALLY not looking forward to that but just the fact we may have to is a small price.

Thank you all so much

I’ll tell you what,ya think your tuff till you run up against something like this. Your kids are your kids till the day you die but when they come up in there white coats and tell you ten different things that could kill your baby and every damd thing they want to do to stop it can kill her too. Somehow you have to tell them is or is not ok to do it, just seems a little overwhelming. This afternoon tho she did come around she can’t really talk but she can squeeze your hand and that so much more than we have had all week. I’m still watering down the family emails because this is not a family hospital and we just don’t need them here right now. We’er hopping that we can start to explain to her tomorrow what has happened and what there going to do. the doctors are much more optimistic then a few days ago. If she continues to improve we’ll be on are way. The chemo doctor said the treatment is working great and has kill most of the bad cells already,the main problem right now is her lungs and hart because of the treatment just to save her life. If in the next day or two they can get that stuff under control we’re golden. Thanks for having my back I hope I can give even better news soon, not that this is all that bad.

thanks

NOVEMBER 6, 2010 From Nicole’s Family

Wanted to share this recent email from Nicole’s Dad. Read with caution, it hits pretty hard!

“Subject: Nicole 11 6 10
Yesterday we did our best to have a celebration of life for Nicole before she was laid to rest at Sunset Hills in Flushing. I started the emails to keep our family and fiends aware of her condition and told them to share this with the people who would like to know. Even before we lost her, the magnitude of how many there are who not just know about Nicole, but were praying for her and us.There has been support form all over the country here and in Canada,this was and is still overwhelming to try to comprehend that this much compaction is still in the world. Nothing will bring her home and the pain is so very deep but you should know how much this has help us and how humbling it is to have so many in so many states that only what one thing (to help). This is to say thanks to all of you so very much you have given more strength to us than you will ever know. A great hole was tore in our hearts, but all the love and concern we have felt has help to start to fill that great void. In the hallway just outside her door there was a board where people put cards and pictures,I had sat with Nancy as she said why is my baby so sick? and I had no answer. As I walk out the door I saw a card at eye level that said ,
There is no answer
There never was an answer
There never will be an answer
That is the answer
The words are not comforting or inspirational , they do not give us Peace, they are reality. We will try not to waist time asking because it will not help us heal. I’m sending a picture with this so that the many people that prayed, for Nicole can see what a cute face and bright eyes she had.It was hard for our fiends and family that would love to help and that there just isn’t anything that they can do,it was the people at Computer Dr in Davison that had taken my old laptop removed the pictures and gave them to me and would not charge us the day before visitation started. I hope some day I have the chance to help someone as much as all of you have helped my family. Again Thank You All SO Very Much.

Yours Mark , Nancy and Jennifer Avitts

simply cut/pasted other statistics that are available to anyone from various media outlets within the world wide web. (Okay, I just wrote that part.)

What do the top ten cities with the highest poverty rate all have in common?

Democratic leadership!

#1. Detroit, MI: hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1961;

#2. Buffalo, NY: hasn’t elected one since 1954;

#3. Cincinnati, OH: . . . since 1984;

#4. Cleveland, OH: . . . since 1989;

#5. Miami, FL: has never had a Republican mayor;

#6. St. Louis, MO: . . . since 1949;

#7. El Paso, TX: nas never had a Republican mayor;

#8. Milwaukee, WI: . . . since 1908;

#9. Philadelphia, PA: . . .since 1952;

#10. Newark, NJ: . . . since 1907.

Einstein once said: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.:

Yet the disadvantaged habitually elect Democrats – yet remain
disadvantaged.

Edit: We could add a state to the list of cities that are stuck on stupid: California. Through the 80s and 90s the State of California had relatively good government, with two Republican governors servings eight years each – Pete Wilson and George Deukmajian – even though the Democrats had growing majorities in the legislature.

Then Gray Davis, Democrat, was elected, and with a Democratic governor and democratic legislature, spending got out of control, the state was/is perpetually on verge of bankruptcy, and Gray Davis was recalled, midway into his second term.

That gave California a nominally Republican governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Unfortunately for the citizens of California, the teachers’ and other government employee unions mounted an anti-Arnold TV campaign, shortly after he took office, with commercials airing nightly for six or eight months calling Arnold a liar, accusing him of destroying the school system, etc, et al.

After the government employee unions had spent between $60 and $70 million on their anti-Arnold campaign, Arnold caved, even the Terminator couldn’t hold up to the left-wing onslaught. Now California is facing a $40 billion shortfall, and the left-wingers are raising taxes and fees on everything in sight. They will end up driving more businesses out of California, as Gray Davis did, and dig themselves into an even deeper hole.

On a much, much larger scale than the cities mentioned above, California Democrats are “stuck on stupid.”
Ok, back to me……I am no expert on the economy or government of California. To be honest, with the exception of a few of my good friends that live there, I could really care less about the state…

I have lived a very unusual life as far as career paths and political affiliation. For fifteen years I carried a union card with the Michigan United Council of Carpenters, Local 687. For 8 years, I owned a medium sized commercial construction business. Very few Americans have walked both sides of that road. (The organized labor side and the entrepreneurial business minded side) There was a time when I leaned toward the Democratic minded politicians for promises of fair wages, health benefits, and many other nice sounding items. But now, looking back at my lifetime and looking forward at the direction we are heading in, it seems clear to me that the more government takes control of our personal and financial lives, the more things continue to take the current downward spiral.

I think it’s unfortunate that so many of our votes are forced into “left or right”, “black or white”, “democrat or republican” categories. Too many of life’s issues are gray areas that deserve more attention. Maybe in our lifetimes we will see a better method than the two party system.

Consider what points are the most important to your family. Your kids, your Grandparents, and yourself….. Why is it that someone will vote for a candidate just because they are pro-life or pro-choice, when so many other issues matter? Thanks for giving me a few minutes on my soapbox….DO THE RIGHT THING!!!!

Baked Whitefish and Herbs

Ingredients:

3 1/2 pounds whitefish fillets
4 ounces melted butter
2 pounds tomatoes, peeled, seeded and sliced
1 1/4 cups dry white wine
2 teaspoon dried savory or oregano
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
Black pepper and hot red pepper to taste
Salt to taste
Chives or parsley, minced, for garnish

How to cook :
Arrange the fish fillets in a buttered baking pan. Pour the butter over the fish.
Combine the wine with the mustard and pour in the pan. Sprinkle the fish with savory or oregano, garlic powder, and the black and red peppers. Bake at 350°F for about 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, sprinkle the tomatoes with the salt.
Remove the fish from the oven and arrange the tomato slices on top. Bake for about 20 minutes longer.
Before serving, pour the pan juices over the fish, sprinkle with the chives or parsley and season with more black pepper. (It is preferable to thicken the pan juices in a saucepan by boiling for about 10 minutes.)
Serve the juices in a small bowl with the baked whitefish
